The Ironsides
September 15, 1873
Beyond the boundary of the shipwreck preserve
Lies a steamer whose story’s seldom heard
She cross the great lake with her passengers and freight
Until that gale arose, and she met her sister’s fate.
The Ironsides, she steams no more,
She spends the days off the Grand Haven shores,
And bids the divers “come explore.”
Captain Sweetman, tried as he might,
Couldn’t make the harbor, and finally lost the fight.
29 spared, but 20 swept away,
Thank God for the ladies who to charge of the day.
The Ironsides, she steams no more,
She spends the days off the Grand Haven shores,
And bids the divers “come explore.”
The finest work by the builders of renowned.
Majestic lines, admired by all around,
And mighty arches, that kept her structure sound.
The Ironsides, she steams no more,
She spends the years off the Grand Haven shores,
And bids the divers “come explore.”
She hasn’t seen the surface for more than a hundred years
And unaware are all those swimming near
But God remembers every soul taken here
The Ironsides, she steams no more,
She wastes away off the Grand Haven shores,
And bids the divers “come explore.”
The Ironsides, the ironsides,
The Ironsides she steams no more.
So shed a tear for the things forgotten here,
And greet her friends on Heaven’s shore.
The Ironsides, the Ironsides, the Ironsides she steams no more
The Ironsides, the Ironsides, the Ironsides she steams no more,
Ironsides forever more
Ironsides queen of our shores
