“Free” comes as a release of tension at the end of the journey taken on Due West. Free was written by Althea within an imagined afro-futuristic reality wherein the ideals of Black liberation have finally materialized and peace is experienced between both the human and more-than-human communities of which we are all a part. “Free” features lush performances from Althea SullyCole on kora and vocals, Ras Moshe Burnett on flute, Rossyl Esdras Boussamba Linguissi on bass, Alec Saelens on guitar and Jeffrey A. Jones on percussion.

Althea SullyCole is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and ethnomusicologist originally from New York City, currently based in Montreal, QC, where she is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Althea studied her primary instrument, the kora, a 21-stringed West African harp, under korists Yacouba Sissoko and Edou Manga.
