Wavelength 580 by Amber Schnake

Wavelength 580 refers to the approximate wavelength of yellow light: 580 nanometers. The entire work is centered around 15 natural occurrences of the color, but what these plants and rocks can represent for any individual person varies so much. Even for the things that might remind us of our worst moments, how can we remind ourselves that the worst of times are frequently outnumbered by the best of times? Put simply, we are capable of creating an even better future when we allow a shared sense of vulnerability to diffuse what we dislike most about ourselves. Each movement is a musical illustration of my own thoughts on each plant or rock, but the environments created are broad enough for others to see their experiences as well.

Amber Schnake is a composer, percussionist, and multimedia artist from Overland Park, Kansas. As a lover of plants and nature, their work makes frequent use of patterns and simple ideas that unfold gradually. She aims to use music to create environments and stories inside them, hoping to communicate her experiences of being neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and a human living in the 21st century.
