Spell 189 by The Horn
THE ONLY SPELL FROM VOLUME ONE THAT I WILL EVER RELEASE
I started The Horn in 1997, but it was three years before I actually released anything - I wasn't sure it was even a "thing", it was just me fucking around with this idea I had, to put the Spells to music. But in 2000 I did release it, and a few friends liked it, and I decided to keep doing it... and here we are, nearly a quarter of a century later.
I will never re-release Volume One, because it sucked - it was recorded in terrible ways with terrible instruments and I had no idea what I was doing. I have re-recorded all of the original Spells from Volume One and sporadically placed them on various subsequent volumes - except this one, Spell 189. This one was the first time I had tackled a longer piece, and I think, out of all the terrible pieces on Volume One, this is the only one that I'm still actually kinda proud of.
I can't remember exactly when this one was recorded, but I suspect it was 1999 to 2000 - it was the last Spell of the volume, and isn't too bad. It has been remastered for this 2024 release, but no other editing or fixing has happened - it's exactly how it was recorded, twenty four years ago.
Longtime Horn fans will recognise all the elements that were to become Horn staples - faux-Egyptian blackmetal riffing, ambient sections, radio-play-style spoken-word recitals of dialogue, ridiculous pomp and drama... all the pieces of what would become a very long-term project were all there, back last century when this was being recorded.
