Michel Banabila joined Yasar Saka for the first time on stage while appearing in 'East meets West' at the Womad festival in Reading, UK 1992. Soon after that they released two albums.

At Peter Gabriel’s UK Womad Festival in 1992 Michel Banabila and Yaşar Saka performed together in “East Meets West”. They then went on to record and release two albums. Yaşar Saka is a Turkish multi-instrumentalist who has studied music technology; Michel Banabila is a Dutch composer who entered the scene in the early 80s performing on electronics, acoustic instruments, found objects, field recordings, and vocal snippets from radio, TV, and the internet. So what we have on 1993 is a balance between experimental and ethnic music that works extremely well. These seventeen timeless tunes merge ethnic, rock, and ambient music into something that defies classification. Some of the tracks have a jazzy bent, while others tend to the cinematic, cabaret, or café music. The one track that really resonated with me is the exquisite “Zero,” a beautiful piano and synth track that shows a strong Krautrock influence from Neu 75! 1993 is quite a remarkable compilation album and sure to please many of our readers. WESTZEIT (december 1994) Variety:
The Turkish saz-player Yaşar Saka and Dutch-Yemeni keyboarder Michel Banabila get a hand from a bunch of friends on guitar, hammond, percussion, etc, to mentally decorate their second album The Dreamfields. All ten instrumental tracks, written by the Rotterdam based duo, have a strong meditative quality. This is where traditional instruments collide with electronics in the nicest way possible. Unlike other ambient projects, variety is the spice of this album. Highly recommended. (MH)

Sinds 1993 wijdt dit duo zich aan wereldse ambient, geinspireerd door Erkan Oğur, Brian Eno, Can en The Orb, maar door een oorspronkelijk instrumentarium voorzien van een geheel eigen Arabische / Aziatische draai. A Living Thing is een degelijke compilatie opgevuld met nieuw materiaal en geremixte oude composities. Banabila & Saka chillen op on-Nederlands hoog niveau.

GONZO CIRCUS (#13, 1998) - betoverende ambient:
Op The Dreamfields werkt Michel Banabila voor de tweede keer samen met de Turkse muzikant Yaşar Saka. Diens instrumenten (zoals de saz, kemane en ud) zorgen voor een boeiende contrast-werking met Banabila's moderne technologie. De plaat is bij Banabila thuis op een 8 sporen recorder opgenomen en dat is een waarborg voor de intimiteit en soberheid van de muziek. Op The Dreamfields vind je pakweg drie 'songtypes'. Vooreerst heb je die zalige combinatie van opzwepende ritmes en oosterse mystiek ( een beetje zoals die van Jah Wobble ten tijde van 'Without Judgement'). Slepende drums, een ronkende bas en arabische melodieen voeren je weg naar hogere sferen. Daarnaast zijn er de betoverende ambient stukken. Met Turkse instrumenten en etnische percussie op de voorgrond maakt het duo zalige en zeer suggestieve klankweefsels, ideaal voor een soundtrack.


GONZO #146 (2018):
Dromerige muziek voor bij kaarslicht, meditatief en soms mysterieus. Banabila, Saka, en de muzikanten waarmee ze samenwerkten, gebruikten een breed scala aan instrumenten, uit zowel Westerse, als Turkse, Arabische en verschillende Aziatische tradities, met als gevolg dat geen nummer hetzelfde is. Het ene moment waan je je in een souk in de Levant, het volgende op een steppe in Midden-Azië, dan weer ergens in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Zowel de geest van de Turkse folk pionier Erkan Oğur, als die van de Engelse ethno-ambient wegbereiders O Yuki Conjugate waart door de muziek. In een kwart eeuw is het niets van zijn zeggingskracht verloren, juist omdat het niet in een hokje paste, en daarom is het deze digitale heruitgave absoluut waardig, (Maarten Schermer)
