My girlfriend was my first safe space. My home. She was the first place I could be as Black and queer and myself as I wanted to be. The whole world could hate me, but our love was my liberation. When the relationship ended- my heart and my whole world broke with it. I had never seen a musical about Black queer love. I wanted to see that musical. I wanted to share a story about falling in love and the grief of losing it from the perspective of a Black queer woman. I wanted to sing about shame, addiction, casual sex, little Black girls, fairy tales, being petty and young and growing up a little. Honestly I wrote this musical to save my life.
