Dori from Acceptance by Billy Childs
I grew up in a household rich with music; my parents had very broad and eclectic (and really good) taste in music. I was exposed to everything from Handel’s Messiah, to Barbra Streisand, to the Modern Jazz Quartet. One of the styles of music that I grew to love, as a child, was Brazilian Music – Jobim, João Gilberto, Stan Getz and Sergio Mendes were constantly on the Magnavox record player. Fast forward to 1990, well into my career, I went into this little club in the valley called Le Café and heard some of the
most extraordinary music I had heard in my life – the music of Dori Caymmi. He was performing there with his band. Beautiful heart-rending melodies, soulful singing, intoxicating harmonies. I knew I had to meet this man, so I introduced myself and we became friends. A few years later I had the honor of playing with him, touring the states and also recording with him; he was the first Brazilian artist that I performed with and learned so much from being around him. So this samba, which uses a Partido Alto and Baião rhythm, is dedicated to my friend, Dori Caymmi.
