Dare by Biomania
Biomania return with a new single after a successful slew of releases leading up to their debut album titled ‘Dare’, a captivating display of modern jazz showcasing the quintet in prime form.
Band leader and Saxophonist Thierry Lemaitre (Ephemerals, Wolfgang Valbrun), leads the charge on a group comprised of supremely talented Parisian musicians that have already caught the attention of BBC 6 Music, FIP and a whole host of key venues around France who have booked them in for live showings in 2025.
Inspired by the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD, Robert Glasper, and Kamasi Washington this new track adds another intricate showing to their catalogue, beginning with a quirky, staccato motif that lays the foundations for the piece. The same melody is then intelligently shifted into lengthened, legato notes that completely shift the mood with phased ride patterns creating an expansive arrangement that draws you in.
Notably on this track, Lemaitre focuses his attention to the hook, leaving space throughout for the band to shine with jaw-dropping solos. Soon after the opening sequence, the guitar playing of Arthur Links can be heard swooping into the fray, leading the band with a glowing display of distorted Jazzy ear-candy. Similarly in the later half, the rhythm section hits the spotlight, with bassist Nicolas Bauer and drummer Benjamin Pellet bouncing fills and improvisation off each other in a masterfully orchestrated duet, with Công Minh Pham supplementing with atmospheric keys and synth work.
Not only does the track highlight the technical prowess of its members, but we also get a glimpse into their ability to write material that has a bit more accessibility than your typical Jazz number. As previously alluded to, the hook laid down by Lemaitre gives the track an undeniable catchiness presenting an enticing contrast of technicality and musicality.
If the previous singles showcased the band as whole, ‘Dare’ introduces each member's talents individually, giving us a warm welcome into their world of Hip-Hop and Soul infused Jazz.
Biomania is Thierry Lemaitre’s latest project. Initiated as a solo beat-making venture during the pandemic, the project soon developed in a new direction thanks to the four outstanding Parisian musicians who joined him. Their interplay is fresh and organic, mixing soul vibes, vintage hip-hop grooves, and jazz improv.
