The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) (Russian: Экспериментальный полёт «Аполлон» – «Союз» (ЭПАС), Eksperimentalniy polyot Apollon-Soyuz, lit. "Experimental flight Apollo-Soyuz", commonly referred to in the Soviet Union as Soyuz–Apollo) was conducted in July 1975, the first joint US–Soviet space flight. It was a symbol of the policy of détente that was being pursued by the two superpowers at the time. The ASTP involved spacecraft docking between an Apollo command and service module (CSM) and the Soviet Soyuz 19 capsule. The unnumbered Apollo vehicle was left over from the canceled Apollo missions; it was the last Apollo CSM to fly. The mission is generally considered to mark the end of the Space Race, that had begun in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik 1.
The mission included both joint and separate scientific experiments, including an arranged eclipse of the Sun by the Apollo CSM to allow instruments on the Soyuz to take photographs of the solar corona. The pre-flight work provided useful engineering experience for later joint US-Russian space flights, such as the Shuttle–Mir Program and the International Space Station. Crewed US space missions ceased for several years following ASTP, resuming in April 1981 with the first flight of the Space Shuttle.
