This morning, Londoners at a popular restaurant fled in terror when gunfire erupted inside during breakfast.

At this time, there are no reports of injuries, and in the commotion that followed, the assailant managed to escape.

The BBC has uncovered that the Minister of Defence, Grant Shapps, was there for a planned breakfast meeting with senior staff in a private back room.

Downing Street has refused to confirm if the Minister was there; in what is being called by some, an assassination attempt. The PM has called a Cobra meeting and has placed the government and Parliament on High Alert, and is not commenting further at this time.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Scotland Yard has a heavy presence in East London and is arresting known East End gang members. Sources tell the BBC they are being held for questioning regarding this morning's incident, but Scotland Yard is refusing to provide any official comment at this time.

What we know, at this juncture, is that there was gunfire that appeared to be directed toward the Minister of Defence. That the London Metropolitan Police and National Security Services have been placed at a heightened level of alert, NOT seen since the June 2017 London Bridge attack.
