Opals by Catching Flies
Catching Flies’ music draws from a wide-ranging palette of influences including jazz, soul, hip-hop, house and electronica and has previously seen him handpicked by Bonobo to provide support on his World Tour. Having gathered tens of millions of streams, praise from the likes of Dazed & Confused, iD Magazine, The Guardian and Nowness, as well as the support of Gilles Peterson, Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Julie Adenuga & Huw Stephens and a growing fanbase which has seen him perform across the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia.
March 27th sees the release of ‘Opals’ – a beautiful and meditative cut off Catching Flies’ forthcoming debut album (due for release on June 21st). Inspired by the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Olafur Arnalds, and Nils Frahm’s Solo Piano work, Catching Flies speaks on making ‘Opals’ – ‘I borrowed a Wurtlizer and just spent a few days improvising on it and recording everything into a tape machine. This was one of the first ideas that fell out. The music on the album generally has a lot of layers, but with Opals, I wanted to strip it right back - I wanted to keep it really sparse and simple. A lot of the time it’s the music that comes together very quickly that ends up being my favourite.’
Catching Flies has gathered the consistent support of Gilles Peterson, Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Julie Adenuga & Huw Stephens and a growing fanbase which has seen him perform across the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia. He also took his live show on the road as European tour support for electronic-jazz behemoth Bonobo.
