Damage Remixes by CATNAPP

For many artists, following up an EP with a pack of remixes is essentially a glorified marketing exercise, but for Catnapp, it’s something much deeper—not only does it give the Berlin-based Argentinian a chance to work with other producers she admires, but it’s also an opportunity to hear her own creations processed through the minds of musicians with new and (sometimes radically) different points of view.

Damage Remixes can actually be traced back to Sebastian Szary, who sent Catnapp a message saying that he had an idea to rework “Vamp,” a standout from the original Damages EP, which dropped last year. At the time, there were no concrete plans to do a remix EP, but Szary’s tinkering prompted his Modeselektor partner Gernot Bronsert to cook up his own take on the song. Months later, the two realized that their individual remixes had gone down very similar paths—the main difference was that Gernot’s version had drums—which prompted the longtime studio partners to join forces and assemble the epic, AutoTune-filled rework that now appears on the EP.

Along the way, Catnapp began reaching out to other producers, including the 18-year-old Kattie—a fellow Argentinian she first came across on SoundCloud—whose thundering take on “Hate Hate” reflects a skillset well beyond his years. Husky was another SoundCloud discovery, and the young German has filled his rework of “Damage” with a hyperactive brand of alien drum & bass. In terms of pure energy, he’s perhaps exceeded only by Recovery Girl, an American artist who puts a cybernetic, nu-metal-meets-breakcore spin on “Destroy What I Am.”

Closer to home, Catnapp tapped Bungalovv—another Berlin-based Argentinian—to remix “Slow.” The two had previously collaborated on “Mantis” (off 2018’s Fear EP), and here he folds static crunch into an alluring bit of R&B. IXXF is another frequent Catnapp collaborator—the two worked together on the original versions of “Slow” and “Hate Hate”—but now the Berlin artist has taken a stab at “Weapon,” transforming the song into a wildly intense piece of bass-loaded hyperpop.
