Moving Day by Chris Titchner
Following the more folk based Some Things Never Change and a move down to North Carolina, I looked at the songs I was compiling for the next record and realized that I wanted to make something that was more Rock and less Folk. I gathered up some local musician friends along with my former Three Mile Limit drummer Pat Doyle who was up in D.C. and we rehearsed over several weekends in keyboardist Craig Barber's garage.
When it came time to record I chose Overdub Lane in Durham, NC which is known for its great space and for its fantastic grand piano. Overdub also had a wonderful wurlitzer that appears all over the record.
We recorded the songs live in the studio, spread throughout the various rooms- even utilizing the closets to help get the guitar and bass amps more isolated. Once we got the takes we liked, I went back in and rerecorded more isolated versions of my acoustic guitar and vocals. Then we added the additional instruments like violin, cello, more guitars, and even a brass quartet. Finally we mixed the album onto tape to try and further capture the live and vibrant sound we were going for.
The result is a loose and even playful take on a variety of songs and styles that focused on both my recent relocation and on the changes and experiences in my life over the previous few years following Some Things Never Change.
If you're looking for one of my albums that has a bit more swagger and a more rock sound, then this album is the one for you.
