Lyrics
Music
What is the sound of anger
in your stomach? It ain’t the rumble,
or the gurgling, or the hollow sigh.
I can testify to that before any court
or the dreaded jury of a single child.
What is the sound of the indelible
beauty of the world and some of its moons?
It ain’t a minor chord held up in honor
of disrespectful dissonance, nor a burp
after the virgin’s breastfeeding of the thief.
I am going to die soon, maybe next week,
there is no doubt, but what is the sound
of not being, of the void? It ain’t the hissing
of the burst balloon, nor a one-hand clap,
nor the unclick of the contrapuntal clock.
Who’s to hear? We’re all deaf at death.
Music is for the fools, for those who need
unsilence, for those who dip their bread
into the greasy drip of careless creation.
Listen: this is nothing. It is what it is.
There are no sounds, only devolutions,
no answers, only voices failing.
No wheezing of the nervous system,
no thunder of blood pushing through
the veins. You may hear your heart
clapping, but not after it stops.
