dreamer (1997) by frankie death

Dreamer was the first of a series of compilation albums by frankie death. Home recordings created during the early nineties and self-released on cassette in Melbourne, in 1997.

Most of these songs are first takes - spur-of-the-moment bursts of stoned spontaneity. Four-track recordings, prototypes - the first and worst versions of themselves. Lyrics were often based on poems I'd written. I spent hours sitting in front of the television, wasted, playing guitar on my bed while preoccupied with magical thinking, hallucinogens, and religious cults. Processes that felt more therapeutic, than performative. The nineties were my twenties. Years later, I can see where the storyline changed and how the plot thickened but I am a different person now. There are moments of cringe, like the slight "American" accent in my voice. While these songs may have been spawned in self-medicated moments of self-indulgence, the struggles of my twenty-year-old self were essential to my self-discovery at the time.

All tracks are as they first appeared on tape and are unmastered. Tracks 5, 6, 8, 9, and 13 were remastered by Mike Fridmann for the album Slacker - Early 4-track recordings (1991 - 1999) released on cosmic coffin in 2023.
