Dan composed a chorus during a break between takes on day-one of the recording session (October 20, 1979) and started playing it. Fred Petry (drums) and Scott Parrish (bass) jammed with him, followed shortly by Butch Lacy on acoustic piano. At each repitition, the musicians improvised a little. What they didn't know until later was that the studio engineer was recording the jam. When the engineer played back the tracks, Dan decided to include it in the album, giving the chorus the title, "In Him."

Three days later, Dan recorded the lead vocal and added some harmony tracks. Not satisfied, he found the cast of a musical `("Grease") playing in the dinner theatre next door to the studio, and invited them to join him to sing as a church congregation. Visitors and a few total strangers were also invited, and Dan taught them the brief chorus. Within 15 minutes, about two dozen voices were on tape. When the string players arrived the next day, Dan asked Dave Williamson to write a simple string part, which was recorded, completing the song.
