Ciao Sun by Dave Aju
Hot off the heels of his wonderful album trip TXLAX on mule musiq, West Coast luminary Dave Aju returns to the label with this solid three-track EP more with the DJs and dancefloors in mind again.
“GO!” is a throbbing percussive workout filled with rising tones, twisted snares, and wild psycho-delic sax blasts the likes of which gave not freaked big systems for some time, if ever. “Glendale Blvd Boogie”, a shout-out to his LA studio’s well-known strip, continues the rolling drum grooves laced with large doses of bubbling analog bass arps, freeform vocal chants, and textural layers that morph and build then break down into a smooth latin-tinged funk finish. The EP title track “Ciao Sun” then wraps things up nicely, hitting a unique sweet spot between a barrage of inventive broken beats and swirling cosmic synth bliss, a fittingly warm and low-end-heavy ode to sunsets everywhere.
