First Fruits by Donut Sunday

I went to a wedding last week.

I haven’t been to that church in ages, I forget how differently they do it there. I noticed what had changed since I left, what hadn’t. They rearranged the sanctuary, bought a new projector.

It was rather slick actually.

The words appeared seamlessly on the wall as if they were written by the hand of God at Belshazzar’s Feast. “God has numbered the days…

weighed and found wanting.”

Was I always like this?

Service began, the first chord hit, a stinging heat spread from my spine. An odd emotion, disassociative, comforting, cathartic. I wondered, why after all this time, how,

with my distance, incredulity

can a

chord

a tone

bring tears immediately.

Whose power is this?

The Spirit responded, or He didn’t.

Was it good?

Ezekiel 44: 28-31

28 This shall be their inheritance: I am their inheritance; and you shall give them no holding in Israel; I am their holding. 29 They shall eat the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering; and every devoted thing in Israel shall be theirs. 30 The first of all the first fruits of all kinds, and every offering of all kinds from all your offerings, shall belong to the priests; you shall also give to the priests the first of your dough, in order that a blessing may rest on your house. 31 The priests shall not eat of anything, whether bird or animal, that died of itself or was torn by animals.

1 Corinthians 15: 16-23

16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
