i stayed in that dark room
surrounded by the dark things
and all things that scare me
because if i ran to my family -
where i knew the shadows would not follow
i'd have to suffer through my family
shadowing over me
preaching about shortcuts -
and taking the easy ways.
if they knew about my haircut
they would undoubtedly
disown me -

so i stayed in the dark room
surrounded by the things that caused my anxiety
because i decided it was better
than having my family not support me.

i could cry silently
and suffer quietly
or be one kind of safe
and another kind of afraid.

i could stay without sanity
or gain it for a moment
just to lose it to people
who don't understand me.
