MISTRESS 16 by Autokinetic
MISTRESS 16 opens with the broken-beat acid-inspired "MN Accent" in which a higher register portamento-heavy SH-101 sings over the top of melodic yet haunting chords in an attempt to sum up the general mood of the Minnesota mid-Winter.
"Dark Dialogue" is a collaborative track of AutoClub, the joint project of Autokinetic and Craig Lambert. While the main chord is a 5/4 beat contrasting with the straight 4/4 time signature, this triple and duple meter effect creates an unpredictable, disturbing feeling.
"A Saucerful Of Sequence" introduces the melodic B-side with a rolling bassline and sharp hi-hats conveys anxiety and uncertainty in audio form. An eerie hum generated from a drone synth with uneasy minor chromatic tones represents a spiraling descent down a path to the unknown.
"Imposter Cymbal" closes the 12-inch using competing step length and modulating synth loops creating urgency and a slippery groove that features some heavy 808 percussions with a syncopated snare pattern nod to the great percussionist Max Roach.
The digital bonus track is the most personal and melodic track of MISTRESS 16. As a tribute for a late friend, "Strong Enough" unfolds a focused and purposeful 909 percussion raining down over muted, reverb-engulfed foundational tones while the vocals echoing in rhythmic synchronization with swelling chords drive the dynamics of this track.
