If we were to imagine a form of ambient music being played in the 11th century, it might involve the use of drone-like sounds produced by instruments such as the pipe organ, or the chanting of monks. The music would likely have a repetitive, meditative quality, and its purpose would be to create a peaceful and calming atmosphere for religious contemplation.
