You take the sun on faith
Little lifegiver, easy light dyvour
You watch a crowded field take shape
Praying each withers away
‘Til you’re the only point of comfort that remains
Call in a stiff wind but hold on tight
Or just wait for the rain
Or the rust or wintertime

No more will I wait
For the shades to fall
Doppelgängers
To any unobservant animal
No more will I count
Sand among the dust
Victory is bittersweet
When you outlast compatriots

You look around and nothing’s changed
Except your edges have grown wrinkled
And you’re last to drift away
You feel the summer in your grip
It starts to slip, you start to strip
The bark your lone, marcescent base delineates
Harken to breaks in the blazing heat
Now convalescence lies in wake
Where, then, will the ground shine incessantly
When the branch you’re perched on starts to break

No more will I call
For a crow to come
Soar on past me, claw my sisters
Leave my home a skeleton
No more will I feel
Sunlight on my skin
Withered pastures that I float past
Will one day grow again
Now I’m set adrift
From a downdraft over sea
Currents carry me to shore
Where silt and solemn cover me
Slowly move decay
Crush me to coal, orogenous
Seasons out of time lose meaning
Now we are return to dust
