Shelter Me from MOAI Project by Enrique Plazaola

„Shelter Me“ is telling one of my favourite tales. The people on Rapa Nui feared the evil spirits they called Aku Aku. Legend has it that the wood carver Tuu-ko-ihu went for a walk one night and found two sleeping spirits who had dispensed with their clothes due to the heat. He got scared when he saw that they only consisted of a head, skeleton and abdomen. They were unspeakably ugly. He ran home as fast as he could and carved statues of the spirits (Moai Kavakava). When the spirits heard that they had been seen the next day, they went to the wood carvers house. However, as they saw their wooden images at the door, it scared them so much, that they ran off and never went back to the house ever again.

I have brought a Moai Kavakava back with me as well. It is hung up in the entrance corridor of my apartment so that no evil spirit will ever come to haunt me;)
