The opening tune came to me some years ago in Melbourne, Australia, where I had been visiting my sister, Ashley, during a tour with Battlefield Band. Ashley and her husband, Pete, are master purveyors of the type of evening that renders such mornings unavoidable. “Gillean an Dròbhair” (“the Drover’s Lads”) was one of the first jigs I ever learnt from Aonghas Grant Snr. and is a tune I have never tired of hearing or playing. The Pneumatic Drills were a ground-breaking ceilidh band - led by button-box master Robert Nairn - with whom I shared a great many adventures through the opening decade of this century. The tune was composed to mark the Drills’ Finale Night in the Park Bar, Glasgow, in 2011.
