In July 2021, as part of the ESSE festival in the island of Seurasaari, Helsinki, musician Lauri Hyvärinen and poet/sound artist Juha Rautio performed four one hour improvisations in various natural locations. Using small battery powered electronics, an electric guitar, a typewriter, a dictaphone, a cassette player and voice, their intention was to experiment with the impact of duration, repetition and natural environmental sounds on their performance. In addition, the duo sought to research the balance between text and sound – both conceptually (the effect of sound on text/cognition), and practically (the process of writing as a sound source, and voice as an instrument). After the fact, three fixed pieces were composed by layering different elements of the recordings using a dogmatic but intuitive approach.
