The ghastly truth

In brilliant blue
For a feathery tale

That halcyon bird
Who looks so well
His eye is sharp
And filled with a gleam
But beware the bird by the stream

He looks like a prince
Dressed in ultramarine
The handsomest bird
That you’ve ever seen
He flies like an arrow
As swift as a dart
But there is no escape from the kingfisher’s mark

If you were a lizard
Or you were a mouse
Then you’d never leave
Your lizardy house
Cos the fisher of kings
Is watching your door
And you are the something
That he’s waiting for

The moral, my friend, is terribly clear
Things are not always as they first appear
Don’t be deceived by beauty alone
Or you’ll end up dinner
