White Forest is dedicated to animals including whales, dolphins, coral reefs, sea turtles, as well as cats in the city and birds in the mountains. Along with “Ocean” is the series of Cicada’s work themed with marine and land.

“Dolphins Leap” proceeds with different speeds to imitate spinner dolphins and risso’s dolphins. “Used to be Home” portrayed the impact of offshore wind energy caused on white dolphin’s habitat from their point of views. “Whale Family” is about humpback whales caring and raising babies. “White Forest” starts from the dreamy coral reef spawning into their bleaching due to seawater warming. Cicada’s attempts are to describe the relationship between human and its impact on ocean and animals.

音楽ファンに美しい「余白」を届けるCicadaは、台湾ひいては世界の音楽シーンでも異彩を放つ存在だ。室内楽アンサンブルという形態を用いて、クラシックの弦楽曲を書きながら、ジャンルを超えた魅力があり、さまざまな音楽が持つ特徴を駆使して、聴けば、ポストロック、モダン・クラシカル, サウンドトラック、実験的なサウンドアートと、色々な要素が浮かび上がってくる。
Cicadaが「クラシック音楽」であるか否かについて議論するには、一作一作を見つめて論じるのではなく、彼らが表現しようとする美学に目を向けるべきだ。前作「Ocean」のリリース後、多数のフェスティバルへの出演、映画のサウンドトラックなどの制作を終え、各パートにおける技術と表現力は更に正確さを増し、加えてレコーディング方式の多元化がCicadaの室内音楽という親密な空間の長所と見事に融合している。その結果、新たなフェーズに入ったアンサンブルから、この驚くべき新作「White Forest」はもたらされた。

弦楽のハーモニー、独奏の告白によって、Cicadaは台湾の自然風景に物語を与え、消え去る過程を追い続けている。ため息を一つしたあとでテーマを探し、音楽で記録する。消え去るものへの感傷はありつつも、これまでのCicadaと違っているのは、現実的な感覚が強まったことだ。音楽版ソローの「森の生活」に似て、動物と人間の間の物語の帳を開くように、ストーリーを強く持ちつつ、音楽表現はまとまっていて、豊潤に仕上がっている。

前作の「Ocean」に続いて、自然を観察することはCicadaの長期的なプロジェクトであるだけでなく、楽団の表現の変化を表している。例えば「余白」は音楽におけるモンタージュであるだけでなく、Cicadaのコミュニケーションの願いが描かれている。花連の海に棲むイルカ、サンゴ礁の白化を主題としたアルバムタイトルと同名曲、白イルカの生息地を脅かす脅威…..一曲ごとに主題が明確な楽曲は、ザトウクジラが吹き上げる水しぶきを凝縮させたような、音楽の光を通して、純粋で美しい質感を映し出している。
