"The process of writing rrrrrrafael was a deeply personal experience that occurred during an intense period of musical growth in my life. Amongst the discourse around de/re-constructing club music, I instead relied upon a fairly abstract musical constraint by asking myself the following question: How would you reconstruct music from your mind’s image of sound? I approached this by using a symbolic method of composition, creating graphic scores and making macro-structural decisions based upon my experience of what sounds ‘look like’ before committing to any audio. Because of this, a lot of the sound design is a functional result of different emotional states that I experienced rather than a conscious effort to capitalise on aesthetic complexity." (r hunter)

rrrrrrafael by r hunter is a huge spectral panorama held together at the seams by precise percussion flickering between creaky electroacoustics and punchy HD SFX. The treatment of the sound material here is like hearing the hallucinatory product from a noise removal algorithm pushed beyond its intended domain, something uncompromisingly sharp, rippling, ringing, totally embracing its own digitality. But this digitality is not a cold digitality and finds its counterpoint in various organic interventions, ranging from liquid bass stabs to autotuned lamentations to oceanic drum kit adventures. Throughout this translates into variously sized tension-release-structures keeping these pieces breathing and moving as crisp dsp and smeared tones lose and again assume form, the density of the discrete sound components always allowing for new permutations.
