scatterlings by Glyn Lehmann
Scatterlings is a complete reworking of elements from my album As the Universe Expands for oboe, voice and piano. Fragments of those recordings are combined with atmospheric Hammond organ sounds, enhanced only by reverb and delay. No synthesizers were used.
As with the original work, Scatterlings explores the relationship between an inconceivably massive, ever-expanding universe and the finite lives we experience in each moment. Field recordings from my local environment point to these moments, while the expansive soundscapes hint at the timelessness of the cosmos, within which each of us is both 'a way for the universe to know itself'* and a scatterling, whose atoms will one day 'slowly spread out and diffuse…through the atmosphere'.**

Dedicated to my dad who is 94 and was a church organist as a teenager and for many decades after. He continued playing into his 90s, visiting a nursing home to play piano and bring the shared joy of music into the lives of the residents there.
