Tijgerbrood by Graham Simpson

'Tijgerbrood' is a double album about the sounds and history of illicit Cold War-era transmissions on shortwave radio. Taking its sonic palette from the distinctive characteristics of lo-fi ambient and electronic music of the early 90s, the album was recorded intermittently over a two year period using mostly primitive, out-dated, and noisy equipment which has given the album a distinctive and dark atmosphere all of its own. Beginning with the dreamy electronic landscape of 'Major Minor', the album moves from the lo-fi old school sounds of 'The Nation's Favourite Aphid', and the serene vocals and piano of 'Beloved', to the dark nightmarish sounds of 'Transmissions From Skelton Mast' to the driving melodic techno of the title track.

Instruments and Equipment used on 'Tijgerbrood':
Most of the sounds on the album come from an old Yamaha PSR-200 keyboard dating from 1992. The keyboard has no midi so all parts were played by hand. Other sounds including the drum tracks (sampled from a Boss DR-660 drum machine) were sequenced on an Amiga 500 home computer using a tracker program called Octamed Professional. Effects used include Zoom 1201 and Boss GT6 multi FX units, Line 6 Echo Park delay, and Boss chorus, vibrato, and compression pedals. A V-Tech Music Major toy keyboard was used on 'Major Minor' and 'Sweet Serenity', and a real upright piano was used on 'Beloved'. Vocals on 'Beloved' and 'Quantum Goddess' are by Paul Mills, who also wrote the lyrics to 'Quantum Goddess'.
