The world as we know it is ending. Probably it ended some time ago and it's just taking a few years (or decades) to come to terms with it. With our careless domination of this planet coming to its conclusion are there still a few morsels for us to pluck from the bones, some fresh scars to leave as our parting gift?
This is the headspace of Central New York musician Brendan Kuntz, who has been working under the name Grass Jaw since 2019. On his upcoming album "Oh No", his third since moving to Ithaca (from NJ) in late 2020, there is a restless energy permeating each track. The uncomfortable feeling of knowing too much, and not enough, willed into vibrations, captured via magnets and electrical fields. Harmonies and dissonance manufactured from tensioned strings and plastic keys, pushing and pulling, holding back entropy for the little while we have left. Songs inspired by the monotony, terror and joy that can be experienced in these last days.
