Talentmaker Takes by Hainbach

The Chilton Talentmaker is a 1970s optical sound sampler, very much like the slightly more famous Optigan. Designed as an easy device for beginners to make music and entertain at home, it found late fame through its use in Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" in 2004.

The tracks you hear on this EP are the result of a day spent at the Museo Del Synth Marchigiano, that has one of these in their collection, as it was produced in Italy by GEM. I fell in love with its richly textured lofi sound, and added my own processing by reversing the optical discs, double stacking them and recording everything on tape. There I further edited with speed variations and sound on sound loops.

I found a world in the Talentmaker that feels like the future as seen from a distant past. Stories weave across the tracks, images and song titles pop up naturally. It is a very human instrument, since all the sounds are recordings of musicians playing. You can hear noises and squeaks that make the recording come alive, in addition to the optical sound that adds its own cinematic feel.
