Big Try by Hey Rel
Big Try is not specifically about Providence, Rhode Island but came about because of it. I moved here in the summer of 2023, and fell into a world of visual artists, musicians, and writers. Immediately I was struck by their talent, humor, and commitment to their work. Through my friends, I found the courage to write the EP that lived in my head: the eclectic, spunky collage that is Big Try. After drafting a collection of new songs that fall, I debuted them three months later at a house show, hosted in our shared living room.
My Providence community is all over the EP. A dear friend’s searing basslines, the wonderful folks at Big Nice Studio who helped me record, a photoshoot hosted at a friend’s apartment, the designers and artists and longtime friends who traveled all the way to Providence to hear me play. To everyone I’ve met in the smallest state: thank you for letting me try, in a big way.
