Distraction Machine by Hungry Holograms
Distraction Machine’s tracks came out of a new live performance flow that involved using real drum machines and synthesizers to craft songs with innovative new probabilistic abilities present in Ableton Live 11 suite. You could call it “the Volca album” because all tracks feature the same 6 Korg workhorses as well as an electric bass and guitar. The album is a major step forward for Hungry Holograms and marks the beginning of a new direction in sound and recording. Pushing this hardware to the limits was part of the joy of creating this record, as well as finding a truer voice than Hungry Holograms has ever previously known. Technology played a crucial role, as many custom programs were written to control the synthesizers in real time with an iPad using MIRA. Every track on the record went through a very specific process and were all summed on a 12 channel Soundcraft Analogue Mixer. The themes of the record touch on how easy it is to lose all your time to technology, feeling trapped in late stage capitalism, the mystery itself, mortality, and being present.
