"full of synthy goodness" - Bandcamp New and Notable

Once upon a time I was an Adventure Time toy collector living in a haunted house with a swimming pool in the backyard surrounded by Buddha statues from Ross Dress for Less ®.

“Why did I do that?” you might ask. Some might say that I had no choice. Others would say it all started when my father worked at American🌹Greetings and brought home a VHS copy of Beyond the Mind’s Eye.

“goatjump” is the accumulation of many years spent fiddling with music objects and computers. Garage sale Polaroid video cameras. Rotting Little Golden Book sound boards. Community college intro to music classes. Putting 1,000 caramel macchiatos on a credit card.

I believe it to be the epoch of my digital music endeavors. Looking up to the greats like Eno and Hammer, and rubbernecking at my peers and heroes like Christian Michael Filardo (Holy Page Records), Michael Bauer (LiL PDF), and Josh Lopez (previously known as MATH), I got high and rubbed my fingers on an iPad for hours turned into days.

There’s no easy way to describe the feeling of the process in the moment, but the aesthetic was always in mind. Like a place you go in your head that is influenced by a vast mood board of inspiration, but cancels itself out to become uniquely you. Thus, perhaps, none of my music is “universal,” the very thing that music claims to be.

I am not here to review myself, but simply to leave a message to listeners saying, this album did not just come from nowhere, and even 10+ years later I have personally enjoyed listening to these songs on SoundCloud while waiting in line to fail my driving test in Tokyo because I did not know I was not allowed to bring a bag.

It truly relieves me to know that a firstborn runt album has been “released.” I cannot imagine a better home than Ingrown. Maybe I’ll make another one.
