The barn burned down in December
It was rebuilt in the spring
By the hands of sun-soaked laborers
And as they worked, I heard them sing
Heard them sing

Spotted owl on the flood lights
Looked for prey and flashed her wings
But she never found an answer
To the question that she sings
That she sings

Turned on the computer for the funeral
We stared like strangers on the screen
Our famous friend took out his guitar
We muted ourselves to hear him sing
To hear him sing

Walked past the Baptist church on Sunday
So many neighbors worshipping
And even though they call me “sinner”
I believe in the things they sing
The things they sing

So many reasons why we sing out
In pretty melodies and rhymes
But some days I’m still a baby
I strum my guitar and cry
I just cry, cry, cry
