Bright-eyed and blushing
I turned to the world.
The pallid city
stared back at me.
Stole a portion of light
From my dreaming eyes.
Turned it to neon
along the streets.

The covetous world
set its gaze on my heart.
It needed a torch
to light up the dark.
It tore me apart
And stole the stars from my eyes.
Now I'm just neon
blinking perpetually

Where does the city get its light
But from the innocence of its immigrants?

The next time you drive
down that long boulevard,
Don't look at the sky
for its handful of stars:
Look at the neon
illuminate the dark--
The city's alive with the light
from the innocent hearts.
