Awful Quiet by John Calvin Abney
Abney, in tireless and exploratory form, reimagines the entirety of the Shortwaving EP as a cinematic meditation, composed for solo piano and strings. Each track takes on a different spirit than their counterparts and are named after lyrics from their respective siblings of song.
The midwestern winter, the decay of the concrete and asphalt, and the darkness that descends from the dusky backdrop of being on the sea of interstates as day fades, all exist in the movements and crescendos of Awful Quiet. These are not just companions to the songs of Shortwaving, but a reflection of how everything changes in the face of time, including the thrown shape of our selves.
