Vaporous Matter by Joshua Hyde & Ben Carey
Vaporous Matter is the second release by Paris and Sydney-based experimentalists, Joshua Hyde & Ben Carey. The duo's debut release, 2023's ‘Faultlines’ (SUPERPANG) is a dialogue between the synthesised and the acoustic, with each delving into the universe of the other. This new work further explores the electronic sensibilities of each musician, combining acoustic and electronic sources into dense tapestries of noise, rhythmic asynchrony, and controlled chaos.
About the duo:
Hyde & Carey are composers and improvisers interested in more-than-human aspects of musical instrumentality, with their work described as ‘working at the limen of chaos and control' (Boomkat). In their work, physical, acoustic gestures are augmented and expanded with electronic processes, and electronic sounds are performed with the physicality of acoustic instrumentalism.
Working together since 2008, the pair have collaborated as improvisers, interpreters and composers, working on notated music, interactive electro-acoustics, installations, & extended amplification. This current project sees them create improvised musical structures referred to as ‘a kind of narrative written in wordless chapters.’ (Marc Masters, Bandcamp 'Best Experimental Music: January 2024'). Carey's work with modular synthesisers has been described in physical terms: 'he makes static pulse and shake like swollen lips engaged in the act of vocalizing’ (Bill Meyer, Dusted Magazine), whilst unconventional amplification & layers of electronic processing see Hyde transforming the saxophone into a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument.
