Soulstice Siesta from World Vibe by Jovan Landry
Name idea by Sydney A., Soulstice Siesta is an Afro Cuban inspired track, with a small little flair of Hip-Hop in terms of some sound selections. The majority of the sound selections are instruments used in the Afro Caribbean bands. Months before this creation, I took a trip to Cuba under the impression of participating in a Hip-Hop Symposium. Though things didn't pan out as they should, I was able to engulf myself in the beautiful city, music, and culture. The working title was "Inglaterre" named after Hotel Inglaterre, the hotel my friend and I would go to in Havana to purchase 1-hour WiFi cards, eat and listen to the musicians who would play every afternoon and evening. And before that trip, I spent much time listening to Cuban Hip-Hop and Classic Cuban Music so I can familiarize myself with the music. A week after my trip to Cuba, I attended the Jazz Fest at Millenium Park, and when I was about to head out, a few friends begged that I stay and watch Eddie Palmieri play. They kept on saying, "He's a legend!" So I stayed. I'm glad I did. It was a phenomenal vibe, and we all started dancing. I instantly looked him up and understood why my friends said he was a legend. When we think of Solstice or Siesta, we pair it with the summertime as Spanish/Latinx culture. I decided to use this name for this track, not necessarily the literal meaning of these words. I changed the spelling of solstice to Soulstice because of how much passion and soul goes into Cuban music. In the middle of the song, there is a freestyle bell solo.
Typically in a live performance, the band would spotlight the musicians individually to showcase their performance. When I was in Nigeria in 2019, I played a five-piece drum set, where I was front and center, and everyone had to listen to my call to switch the drum pattern or from one solo to the next, with my drum solo concluding. With SS using primarily drums and percussions, I decided to go with bells, to help this section stand out from the rest of the instruments. Soulstice Siesta is my favorite track on World Vibe that I continuously play on repeat. SS also has the most instrumentation and structure on the EP.
