Intersection by Juwon Ogungbe

Intersection is a group of songs that tell a story inspired by a sequence of events that happened several decades ago, in London.
Two Londoners of Yoruba heritage come across each other after several decades of no contact, in a waiting room in the Nigerian High Commission. They reflect about their shared experiences in London and Lagos. Why did they lose contact? And are they willing to pick up their friendship from where they left it?
Intersection features five songs – Which side you dey hide? We get history, Wahala dey for ground, Oga at de top, and Wetin I fit tell you? Ogungbe chose to create and perform the songs in Pidgin English, aiming to find personal intimacy and a form of accessibility on a universal scale.
Ogungbe says ‘The whole EP is inspired by the Trickster Psychopomp of the Yoruba belief system, who is said to preside over all roads and the intersection where these roads cross. In this creative vision, singing drama genres such as Opera, Nollywood and Bollywood rub shoulders with the art of Yoruba thespians such as Hubert Ogunde, Duro Ladipo and others, who also used singing and lyric theatre devices to shed light on the nooks and crannies of human interaction’.

Juwon Ogungbe is a London based composer, singer and theatre maker whose music draws inspiration from Opera, Western Art Music and African music genres.
