The beat has a moody feel, opening with a growling bass. This song is from the POV of the youth and the adversarial relationship often held between them and their elders once they reach the age of reason. "You told us that we shouldn't try to change ourselves," and "you wish that everybody was just like you," paint a picture about how often the older generations wish to impose their commonly outdated methods and ways of thinking onto the younger generations and how the youth push back.
This can be applied to trivial differences to more serious political ones. The lyrics continue to tell a story about an abuser losing their grip of their defiant children who decide to learn about their world through their own eyes. And subsequently move on without them.
"But we were never equal, so we ask for help, and you tie us to your standards like you always do," is specifically about the financial differences between the baby boomers and the younger millennial and gen-z counterparts. And how their willful ignorance to how the world has changed around them is setting their kids up to fail in a system that's now rigged in an new era of post-Reaganism.
