I recorded this album as part of a ritual. An old and dear friend of mine told me that zhis boyfriend Avery was in the hospital with pneumonia and possibly covid and had been on a ventilator. When I heard that, I immediately knew what I had to do: perform an occult ritual in the interest of Avery's recovery. I drew a sigil, sent it to my friend, and then got to work recording an album where each track had a synth part where, when recording it, I played the notes with one hand and with the other I traced the sigil on this x-and-y axis thing my recording software uses to control how the synth sounded. I would use the proper terminology but the only thing I know about music production is how to do it, not the names for things.
Halfway through the recording of the album, my roommate's dog Pucker came into my room. He doesn't usually do that, but since he wasn't making noise or getting in the way of anything, I let him stay and recorded a couple of songs with one hand on the keyboard and the other petting a cocker spaniel. Sometimes, during the parts where I put the microphone part of my earbuds in my mouth to record the sound of myself breathing, I even pet him with two hands. I took a couple of pictures of him and sent them to my friend. Zhe liked them.
Unfortunately, I got up and set my bass against my dresser and it fell over, scaring the dog and sending him scampering out of the room. Just as well. It was cool having him there, though. He had no idea what I was doing. He has no idea what noise music is. He doesn't know what hospitals or ventilators or covid are. If he did, though, I would like to think he would have wished Avery well. I would like to imagine he lent some of his energy to me while I was recording. He certainly made things feel like they had the possibility of being okay.
