THE FAMILY


Late night
Coming back from Melbourne
From a party on the Kangaroo Plains,
We stop the car by a black pool.
The air is immobile, crystalline.
I get out, light a match,
And study my star map.
I blow out the match,
And overhead and before and below me,
Doubled in the unmoving water,
The million stars come on
That I have never seen before
And will never see again.
And there are the two
Daughter universes of my universe,
The Magellanic Clouds –
Two phosphorescent amoebas overhead,
And two in the bottomless water.

 


LA FAMILIA


Tarde en la noche
volviendo de Melbourne
de una fiesta en Kangaroo Plains,
paramos el auto junto a una laguna negra.
El aire es inmóvil, cristalino.
Salgo, enciendo un fósforo,
y estudio el mapa de las estrellas.
Soplo el fósforo,
y por encima y adelante y debajo mío,
doble en el agua inmóvil,
millones de estrellas aparecen
que no había visto nunca antes
y que nunca volveré a ver otra vez.
Y ahí están esas dos
hijas universos de mi universo,
las Nubes de Magallanes –
dos amebas fosforescentes por encima,
y dos en el agua sin fondo.
