When I first heard from Lawrence English that he was going to Vela Luka, this village where Luc and I spent several summer vacations in the 60s, I felt a little peak in my heart. Suddenly, this place had to come out of my secret nostalgia into the conscious mind.
I was deeply touched when I listened to Lawrence English’s piece, it had such atmosphere. There were sounds I could recognize and I could essentially smell that special place once again. My memory was consumed with everything about Vela Luka. It was as if I was transported back out onto a boat trip with our friends Kossa and Pierre. I could hear their voices, I could taste the salt water and feel the sun and sea on my body once again.
I found that even with all these new and modern sounds that Lawrence English had gathered for his Approaching Nothing I could still sense the Vela Luka that exists in Luc’s field recordings on Presque Rien. Lawrence brought me back to Vela Luka.
I just wondered how it would be to listen to Approaching Nothing with a virgin ear.
Thanks Lawrence, for this souvenir you have given me.
