I was a borrowed body, I was
I was a stand in
All of the lines I drew upon
Were only imagined

Were only a version of it

I was a masquerade of face paint
Faulty impressions
Called in a life that passed me by
With othered attention
And all of the mean half-wars
Of cold and untended hearts
Like mine

The holiest part is the listening
People so young, so green
They’re teaching us love

To really show up

I’ve seen the mother
Hide her struggle behind
An imprint
Who would we be
Without our grief, but

Like asking a child
