Lifesong by Lunar Paths
It began with a dirty step sequence and energising, pulverising percussion from Kevin. Diane, who had been listening to klezmer music and Bollywood soundtracks, was clearly influenced when she started to write and add MIDI to what Kevin had sent her!
Diane had also been reading about World War II heroine and anti-fascist activist Krystyna Skarbek, and started thinking about her superhuman courage. This subject matter seemed to fit well with the new song that she and Kevin had created, because it sounded so rousing and heroic, and she felt that Skarbek’s story would provide the perfect lyrics.
However, the more she wrote, the more she realised that all humans enact simple deeds of heroism every single day, just by surviving in these difficult times. Life is so precarious, physical and mental health so precious, and financial security an increasingly difficult thing to find and keep, and all around the world—especially in those places where we see circumstances and bravery to match those of Skarbek—people are fighting just to survive and to live with honour and dignity.
Lifesong is an anthem for them, for all of us, a reminder that lo and behold, we are brave, we all have it in us to be courageous and defiant, and we must keep going, keep hoping and never give up.
