Alexandra’s flight

In a cocoon of soil, in darkness and in silence
a nymph grows on bread and prayer

Gerontissa Melani asks her in the dark
“How do you endure fast? How do you deny company?”

“Every hour of the day, I study the life of a saint
spinning thin flax, an Alexandrian knot

and after I've eaten my bread I stand patiently
and wait for the end, in sweet hope.”

Inspired by Historia Lausaica of Palladius, a collection of stories of monks who lived in the first Christian centuries. It is the story of Alexandra, a girl who spent the last ten years of her life in a tomb, without having contact with the world except from one little hole through which she accepted bread. I imagined her as a butterfly getting ready for her first flight.

Η γερόντισσα Μελάνη τη ρωτάει στα σκοτεινά
«Πώς αντέχεις τη νηστεία πώς αρνιέσαι συντροφιά;»

«Κάθε ώρα που περνάει κάποιον άγιο μελετώ
κλώθωντας λεπτό λινάρι, κόμπο Αλεξανδρινό

Κι αφού φάω το ψωμί μου στέκομαι καρτερικά
κι αποδέχομαι το τέλος με ελπίδα γλυκιά»

Εμπνευσμένο από το Λαυσαϊκόν του Παλλάδιου, μία συλλογή από ιστορίες μοναχών που έζησαν τους πρώτους χριστιανικούς αιώνες. Είναι η ιστορία της Αλεξάνδρας, μιας κοπέλας που πέρασε τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια της ζωής της μέσα σε ένα μνήμα χωρίς να έχει επαφή με τον έξω κόσμο παρά μόνο μέσα απο μιά τρύπα από την οποία δεχόταν ψωμί. Την φαντάστηκα σαν μία πεταλούδα που ετοιμάζεται για την πρώτη της πτήση.
