Family Plot, the upcoming album from Matt Kollock, exists in a place where emotions like deep grief and somber sadness coexist harmoniously with feelings of red-hot rage and “fuck-it-all” irreverence. A laugh turns into a growl which becomes a cry that transforms into a scream that recedes into a sarcastic chuckle.

And these expressions are fueled by the heaviest music Kollock has ever made.

Crushing drums, bruising bass, gloriously fucked-up guitars and layers of vocal madness create an atmosphere that turns the tables on the demons of childhood trauma and neglect. This is music of vengeance, transformation and triumph. And it feels really good.

Over the course of 20 tracks and 40 minutes, Family Plot blazes a healing path through the trauma of Kollock's childhood and the aftermath of his ongoing family estrangement, visiting every emotion along the way.

This revolutionary record takes Kollock’s experiences of childhood trauma and neglect and marries them to music meant to played at high volumes in safe spaces. It’s rock-and-roll music drawn from influences located at the heavier end Kollock’s musical taste spectrum. Think Melvins meets Mötley Crüe with a dash of Minutemen and a sprinkling of Morisette. All passed through the filter of Kollock’s unique, trauma-informed worldview.

Presented in two halves, Family Plot focuses first on the trauma and neglect of the artist’s childhood as a sheltered, isolated and “too-sensitive” boy growing up at a time and in a part of the world where people were expected to keep their mouths shut about such things.

Side two explores the positive transformation the artist has undergone since deciding to “go no contact” with his family of origin, detailing his discovery of “the others” and a new role outside the small, shameful one he was cast in by the caretakers and community of his childhood.

Family Plot is Matt Kollock’s most personal and truthful musical statement. Created over the course of nearly three years in multiple locations across various time zones, it represents the culmination of Kollock’s most important era both as a musician — and a human being.
