"With scores of releases as Mercy Choir and under other collaborative guises, Paul Belbusti continues to roll into new sonic territory. Apostrophe Music, the third Mercy Choir release of 2013, adds another singular entry to his discography: a completely instrumental record.

An apostrophe is a mark of omission as much as possession, a rhetorical cry to some person or thing gone missing—a turning away, etymologically. For his part, Belbusti is taking a hard left, following up Trouble (his recent acoustic collaboration with Lys Guillorn) with this scattered, claustrophobic collection.

Apostrophe Music touches on hazy ambient music (“You Think We Have A Lazy Time,” “Bad Guys With Guns / Good Guys With Guns”), aggressive guitar manipulations (“Our Hearts Were Young,” “Apostrophe Guitar”), and disquieting mechanical mutations (“The Last Jitney to Jakarta,” “God Apostrophe”), among other digressions.

Written, composed, and recorded with an assemblage of live analog instrumentation and portable digital gizmos (iPad apps, pocket synthesizers, field recorders), Apostrophe Music is another glimpse into Belbusti’s divergent imagination: droning, minor-key insistence; bone-dry desert wailings; surreal, unspoken threats in echoing empty rooms. It’s the soundtrack to some apocalyptic film, perhaps—set in a one-bedroom apartment. It is absence, it is possession—it is, audibly, apostrophe music."
